Since our first trip more than 25 years ago, Backroads has focused on traveling responsibly and encouraging our guests to do the same. In choosing to travel primarily by bike or on foot on a Backroads vacation, you are selecting a form of travel that is by its very nature low impact, although not without impact. The use of vehicles to support you on trip routes, as well as the flights or drives that you take to and from trip departures, rely heavily on fossil fuels that increase carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Backroads is partnering with NativeEnergy Travel Offsets to contribute in the fight against global warming. We are offsetting the carbon dioxide emissions generated by the support vehicles used on our trips to help finance and build new renewable energy projects in Alaska. Funding these projects will displace electricity from fossil fuels and reduce other greenhouse gas emissions, making up for the CO₂ emissions that cannot be avoided in supporting our guests on trip.

We encourage you to join us in increased carbon consciousness by offsetting your own travel to/from our trip start. It's simple: log into our NativeEnergy Travel Offsets convenient calculator and input your travel destination and mode of travel (plane, train, automobile). Based on distance and mode of travel, it will calculate a contribution that will "offset" your CO₂ footprint and help build a new wind project on tribal lands.
