Fossil
fuels consumed for a MusicMatters® CoolToursm
Here is how it works:
Burning Fossil Fuels Causes Global
Warming. Burning fossil fuels like coal to make
electricity produces carbon dioxide and other global warming pollution.
So does driving trucks and buses, and flying in airplanes.
Building New Wind Farms Helps Fight
Global Warming. When wind farms generate their
clean electricity, the grid operators have to turn down other
generators to compensate, because there can’t be too much
electricity flowing onto the grid at any time. They generally
turn down generators that burn fossil fuels. By making these polluting
power plants run less often, wind farms reduce the amount of carbon
dioxide and other pollution emitted into our atmosphere.
Many Wind Farms Need Extra Financial
Support. In recent years, wind farms have become
much more competitive with polluting power plants. But today,
the clean electricity generated by many wind farms still costs
more than dirty electricity. Before building new wind farms, developers
must find a way to cover their extra costs.
You Can Provide Financial Support
for New Wind Farms. To cover their extra costs,
some wind farms sell "Green Tags" – a widely traded
commodity that consists of the rights to the carbon dioxide and
other emissions reductions associated with green electricity.
The electric industry developed Green Tags so that people who
can’t buy green electricity can achieve the same environmental
benefits – by buying Green Tags to offset the pollution
from their consumption of dirty electricity or their use of fossil
fuels. Environmentally, buying electricity and Green Tags is the
same as buying green electricity.
MusicMatters® CoolToursm
Helps Build New Wind Farms. Most sellers of Green
Tags sell them from existing generators. Our partner NativeEnergy
took a new approach, using Green Tags to help build new wind farms.
MusicMatters® CoolToursm participants buy –
in advance – all the Green Tags to be generated by the wind
farms over their expected operating life of 25 years. This provides
critically important up-front financial support and so helps get
these wind farms up and running. You can tell your fans that you’re
helping build the first Native American-owned large-scale wind
turbine in the country. Environmentally speaking, that's a lot
better than buying green electricity or Green Tags from wind farms
that were built some time ago. Folks who really want to make a
difference help build new wind farms!
