“More than ever, curbing the effects of climate change requires us to step up our efforts as businesses, and individuals, despite the recent change in the US Congress.”

That’s the message that NativeEnergy staff member George Hoguet took away from the first annual Association of Climate Change Officers (ACCO) conference in Hyattsville, Maryland. On November 8 and 9, government officials and sustainability leaders convened to update ACCO’s members on policy and business best practices to address the problem of stopping climate change in an era of stalled legislation and waning public commitment.

At the conference—which took place shortly after the 2010 general elections— there was a strong sentiment that the U.S. can’t rely on government legislation to lead the way. Instead, businesses and individuals must take the initiative voluntarily to reduce their carbon emissions.

Following this theme, conference attendees participated in numerous breakout sessions to brainstorm solutions. Companies shared sustainability best practices, and emphasized a need for a standard emissions tracking methodology. In addition, ACCO members are working to professionalize and elevate the role of climate change officers within organizations, with an eye toward developing a standardized certification process.

To support these important conversations, NativeEnergy offset the ACCO conference, donating 67 tons—enough to offset the energy and waste generated by the event venue and also speakers’ travel and lodging.
