Biomass
The decomposition of biomass organic matter such as woody pulp, landfill waste, and livestock manure releases methane, a natural gas accounting for 16% of all greenhouse gases resulting from human activities. Methane also arises from waste water treatment facilities and underground coal and gas seams. On a kilogram-for-kilogram basis, methane has a global warming potential more than 21 times that of CO2.
NativeEnergy customers are helping several US communities reduce fugitive methane from their older solid waste landfills, which have been operating uncapped. Most of these community landfills have not been producing enough gases to economically justify building gas-to-energy systems from the methane despite the avoided electricity costs. Purchase of the CO2-equivalent methane offsets is help to bring critical funds to make the projects viable.
