Community-based Renewable Energy
Not more than 120 years ago, much of electrical generation and heating in the US was community-based. Communities were self-reliant, and owned and operated combined heating and power systems. Since the 1930’s, however, centralized power stations have been providing the bulk of US electricity needs, at reasonable rates, but with a heavy burden on air and atmospheric pollution. Today, the pendulum is swinging back, and interest is growing in a new network of distributed, community-based generation from renewable energy sources like wind, farm methane digesters, geothermal, small hydropower and solar.
Together with the great support of our customers in purchasing renewable energy credits and carbon offsets, NativeEnergy has been able to help communities and family farmers build more than 30 new cleaner energy projects. Our customers’ offset and credit purchases have helped bring critical funds to the projects, which are displacing fossil fueled-generated grid power, and are lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Self reliance returns to communities – with a little help from their friends.
