As part of its Environmental Initiative, Explorer Ventures offset the company's carbon emissions through the purchase of renewable energy credits from NativeEnergy Travel Offsets.
The decision to offset the company's emissions for the year was made in light of many recent scientific studies pointing to the negative effects of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide on marine ecosystems. Coral reef ecosystems are in decline throughout the world for a multitude of reasons. These studies are showing that climate change affects coral reefs in many ways, including elevated ocean temperatures which cause the coral to bleach and ocean acidification which decreases the coral's growth rate. The combination of these and many other factors decrease the coral's resistance and resilience to storms and disease. The exact nature and outcome of increased CO2 in the atmosphere and the subsequent effect on coral reefs as well as other ecosystems is still uncertain. However, as a dive company which depends on the reefs and the marine animals around a reef, it is vital for us to take care of the resource we depend upon.
Explorer Ventures did not initiate this program without a great deal of thought and research, and assistance from a specialist in energy efficiency. We chose to work with NativeEnergy Travel Offsets due to its reputation as one of the most respected marketers of energy credits. Offsetting carbon emissions cannot hurt and it may very possibly help as long as this effort is not used as an excuse to emit more CO2. In addition to offsetting carbon emissions, Explorer Ventures is actively working to reduce the amount of fuel used. Currently it is not possible for us to operate without the use of diesel fuel; we are actively working to reduce the amount of fuel we do use, by implementing more energy efficient practices and upgrading to more efficient equipment. At the beginning of the year, the Turks and Caicos Explorer II received a new generator and in September both main engines and a generator were replaced on Caribbean Explorer I.
All these actions, as well as our continued efforts, have been taken because we believe that it is the right thing to do as a company which relies on the natural habitat being as healthy as possible. These efforts have been absorbed by the company and have not been reflected in additional costs to our guests. We do hope that you also consider the impact our actions have on the environment and consider offsetting your personal travel emissions with NativeEnergy Travel Offsets. If you have any questions, please contact the Environmental Coordinator Ariana Arcenas, ariana@explorerventures.com.
