Transportation Efficiency
Transportation greenhouse gas emissions accounts for 28% of the total US greenhouse inventory, as expressed in tons of CO2, and have increased by 27% from 1990 to 2006. Heavy duty diesel trucking, mostly for freight shipments, accounts for 18 % of mobile emissions and has increased at twice the rate of overall transport. The biggest contributors to these emissions are the low gas mileage of large trucks, in the 6-7 mpg range, and the fuel from overnight dieseling in rest stops to keep drivers comfortable while they rest.NativeEnergy has partnered with a very creative non-profit in Oregon, Cascade Sierra Solutions (CSS), which has the mission of helping locally-owned, independent trucking firms and owner operators to increase their trucking efficiencies, reducing both costs and greenhouse gases. Carbon offset funds have become critical to the success of Cascade Sierra’s work and in making the anti-idling auxiliary power units and other truck modifications affordable to the truckers.
