Preparing for summer weather: The sun’s harmful rays

As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, many of us will be headed outdoors, to hang on the beach, play softball, volleyball, or, if you are old school, horseshoes. In any case, we are likely to be exposed to the sun’s rays. On the one hand, exposure to sunshine is required for our bodies to manufacture vitamin D. On the other hand, exposure to sun can lead to skin cancer. As an avid sunscreen slatherer, I am interested in the research on the protective products available today. The FDA has finally put into place a set of regulations that products will have to follow, but these will not have to be implemented until 2012.
