According to the World Health Organization, 2 million deaths worldwide are attributable to unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene. Our Clean Water Campaign is changing the lives of thousands through access to clean water.
In Honduras, the location of one of our current water projects, 1 million people lack clean drinking water. The 52,000 people living in rural communities across the municipality of Trojes, Honduras gather their water from springs, rivers and rainwater collection vessels. The lack of a reliable source of clean water contributes to widespread waterborne illness.
Our Honduras Clean Water Project will provide simple lightweight biosand water filters to 1200 households in the Trojes municipality. Keurig Green Mountain has purchased carbon credits associated with 600 filters to reduce their 2013 corporate greenhouse gas emissions and to support their goal of raising the standard of living in coffee growing communities. Carbon credits are generated by the elimination or avoidance of burning wood, sometimes used for water sanitization. These credits reduce 50,000 metric tons of carbon over the first 10 years of the project.
Many of the families in the municipality of Trojes are small holder coffee farmers, including the family of Zadiwalkidi Lopes, a 10 year old who is happy to now have a Hydriad® BioSand Water Filter in her house.
Pure Water for the World (PWW), our implementation partner, has been installing filters in the Trojes municipality since 2009. Their goal is to provide clean water to all 52,000 people in the Trojes municipality. Our Honduras Clean Water project helps PWW reach the 40% milestone.
Our Ghana Clean Water Project is similar to the Honduras Clean Water project and still needs funding. You can learn about the Ghana project, offset your greenhouse gas emissions and provide access to clean water at: http://www.nativeenergy.com/ghana-clean-water-project.html
